In planning and building the house, we were motivated by certain concerns and beliefs. We wanted, for example, to: |

Build it to last Building your own house, particularly with materials that are not ‘mainstream, is a huge undertaking. So we had to get the details right to ensure that the house was strong enough to withstand the elements and the march of time.

|
Cut down on waste Building materials tend to be very expensive. So we tried to use things as sensibly as possible - with a minimum of waste. It's not easy and you learn from experience, but we ordered 450 bales of assorted lengths for the build and got this just about right.

|
|
Appreciate the true costs Conventional materials are in some cases "cheaper" than greener alternatives, but often cost a lot more in terms of the energy demanded to manufacture them and the harmful impact on the environment. We always tried to use re-cycled or renewable materials that don't carry so many hidden costs.

Make it with straw Straw is a renewable waste product, which offers fantastic potential as a building material. Its insulation properties are second-to-none and, when rendered, can create walls that have an aesthetic beauty and a unique feel (that intangible sensation of well-being).

Be decent human beings We wanted the construction of the house to be a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved. Which is why our principal criterion in choosing the various professionals involved was compatibility. It was important that we all liked each other. Generally speaking, if you’re pleasant and honest with others, they will be pleasant and honest with you.
